Meeting VAN Gogh
—– May 3th Youth Art Festival

Golden cornfield, whining crows, burning sun….. , in the summer of 1890, Arles, who was chasing the sun like Kua Fu, a Chinese sun chaser, fell down in the heat wave of the cornfield at last. This moment, which has been frozen into a frame forever, has made itself one of the craziest and most sorrowful pictures in the modern history of painting, while Van Gogh, who presented this image, set an example of art martyr for later generations. Consequently, Underclass art followers who live unknown lives have long been encouraged by it.
Yunnan, a place which comes very close to the Garden of Eden in the east described in Genesis, responds in every way to what has been created by those impressionist masters —– beauty, fertility, miracle, things under colorful clouds and in mountain forests, farms, open wilderness, cornfields, starry sky. Since the 1920s, generations of Yunnan artists started their careers by following in the foot steps of such impressionist masters as Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. They began their art by walking into nature, villages, cornfields, and starry sky. In Yunnan’s modern and contemporary art, one of the most important tendencies is its spirituality, while the philosophic and aesthetic view of modernism is the spiritual origin of Yunnan’s contemporary art. Today, when our topics go frequently to how to surpass modernism, looking back still has its important enlightenment significance. Freedom, science, democracy, and creation, which have been spoken highly of by modernism, equally remain to be the valuable spiritual heritage of today’s artists. They also conform to the value of May Fourth New Culture Movement, the core of which is no other than democracy and science. Looking back is to absorb the spirits of creation, reform, pioneering, and experimenting which are highly praised by modernism, rather than just to inherit the language and methods of modernistic art. In the cultural and realistic context of today’s China, pioneering in art is still worth speaking highly of. It bears the conscience and duty of intellectuals, as well as their mission and pursuit of social reform, cultural reform, and innovative approaches. Therefore, today, a hundred years after the May Fourth New Culture Movement, on the eve of the May Fourth Youth Day, we hold this May Third Youth Art Festival. Firstly, we hope to inherit the spirit of the May Fourth Movement. Secondly, we hope to hold the spirits of pioneering and experimenting in esteem, both of which are still much needed today. It is this attitude that an artist with conscience and duty should have. From this perspective, youth and creation are something forever. They have nothing to do with age, but surely have something to do with heart and spirit.
May the May Third Youth Art Festival be the most dynamic platform for the young artists in Yunnan to realize their self-value.

1. Experiment “Jianghu”
Theme Specification
“Jianghu” is an art project which occurred once or several times a month in such places as Kunming, Lijiang, and Amsterdam during 2005 and 2006. As an extremely flexible project, its artistic expressions range from exhibition halls, streets, apartments to mountain tops, lakes, schools, and public gardens. A variety of folk entertainment and games were integrated into this art exhibition. A number of folk craftsmen, children, and citizens who hadn’t received any artistic education were invited to participate in the art creation. As a result, it quickly attracted much attention from local art circles and media. In an online voting in China in 2006, it was nominated as the best annual exhibition. As the most important avant-garde performance in Yunnan after the year of 2000, “Jianghu” has left its profound impression upon the later development of Yunnan’s art existence.
The background of this section is set as “Jianghu”, an important phenomenon of Yunnan’s experimental art. Meanwhile, the following relevant art areas are systematically reorganized and presented —– the Artists’ Community at the former Bearing Factory, the Artists’ Community at the Automobile Factory, the Artists’ Community at Mayuan residential area, Kunming Loft, Lijiang Studio, TCG Nordica Culture Centre, 943 Studio, and other similar nonprofit art institutions and their international artists’ residential projects. By doing so, the existence of Yunnan art communities and the aspects of experimental art since the year of 2002 are desired to be unfolded.

Collateral Exhibition
1. Fringe Zone —- Transit Plan Passing Ciman Village in Lijiang
Theme Specification:
A changing Naxi-nationality small village
An ancient village changing quickly into rural-urban fringe zone
A group of artists from all parts of China
A discourse activity involving nature, history, current situation, and future
The so-called Transit Plan Passing Ciman Village in Lijiang aims to, by means of a site presented by an art activity, integrate the problems and reflections, which have been triggered in a typical village and a typical age, into a more open context. Homeland, native place, modern times, tradition, conflict, and integration are all placed on a platform of mixture and ambiguity to be discussed and researched. Eventually, a certain interactive possibility between the self and the other of the village is to be explored. The work of the artists is desired to activate both the villagers’ historical memory and the reality concern. Equally, the problems, which have to be faced during the development and change of villages, also provide the artists with some approach to intervention and transition.
By means of the transit and the site, followed by a series of more specific work (exhibition, media transmission, and social discussion), it is hoped that the development of this village may go further beyond the established benefit-based relationship and power pattern. Between the existing model and other possibilities, a more positive, open, and poised approach is hopefully to be found.
